Al-Jazeera is the largest television network in the Middle East
and – in the eyes of its nearly 30 million viewers – a highly credible news
source. Founded as a 24 / 7 Arabic News Channel in 1997 in Qatar, Al-Jazeera was
distributed from the start via satellite across the entire Pan-Arab Region. Its
“news without borders” became a prime source of unfiltered information for
citizens in Arab countries with a censored press.
The channel quickly grew in
importance and is today imitated by dozens of competing Arabic stations. Today,
Al-Jazeera now operates channels for English-language news, children, live
coverage, documentaries, as well as Al-Jazeera Sports which itself is
broadcasting on 17 individual program channels.
Understanding Tomorrow
(عن
كثب),
broadcast on the main Arab-language channel, is currently seen by an estimated
30 million viewers throughout the Arab world.
